The fact that Minister Karamoko Kabbah and the other public officials involved in the plain illegal mining in Kono have not been brought to justice is simply a symptom of the Wild West state that many fear this country is slowly descending into. What is even more infuriating is the silence or seeming complicity by state institutions set up to protect both our environment and the public interest. For crying out loud, what are the National Minerals Agency and the Environment Protection Agency doing about this undesirable mining activity in Kono? Their failure to call out and hold those responsible for the illicit mining resolves any doubt about where their interests lie – certainly not with the state and people of Sierra Leone. No country moves forward where there’s blatant disrespect for the rule of law. Two laws – the EPA Act and the Mining and Minerals Act – have breached. There’s no guarantee that anyone will be brought tot justice. The EPA spokesperson’s attempt this morning on Radio Democracy to justify the ongoing madness says a lot about why citizens continue to lose confidence in many of our public institutions. Sad!
